Beautification Committee to Install "Bandon" Lettering at City Hall

At the July 2nd City Council meeting, Colleen Cardas, Beautification Committee Chair, presented a proposal by the Beautification Committee to install large lettering adjacent to City Hall, which would spell out the word "BANDON" and would be visible to Highway 101 travelers.

The initial concept was to place the lettering project on the vacant land north of City Hall in the area more commonly known as Ruth Ball's Garden. After further investigation, it was determined that the project would not be feasible due to the slope of the property and other obstacles in that area. The Committee then looked at other areas in the vicinity and realized the portion of land on the southwest side of the City Hall parking lot, across from the Chevron service station, has the slope that would be needed for this project. This location also allows for the visibility that the Committee desired. The proposed letters would be approximately 5' high and would lie on the ground at a tilted angle. The background will be ground cover of contrasting colors. The colors have not yet been finalized, but the Committee is leaning towards bronze metal lettering with cranberry-colored ground cover. The cost estimate for the project is $3,500 - $4,000. This money comes from the Community Beautification Fund, which receives its funds from the franchise fees charged to Bandon Disposal & Recycling, the City’s garbage collection franchisee.

After discussing the proposal, the City Council unanimously approved the Beautification Committee’s request to install BANDON lettering at City Hall.
